Giant to hold charity dinner for 1,200

PETALING JAYA: The joy and fun of celebrating any festive season should be shared by all races, including the underprivileged.

With that in mind, Giant Hypermarket will throw a charity dinner on Feb 4 for some 1,200 underprivileged individuals from the low-income community, old folks home and orphanages in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration.

“Initially we thought of doing the dinner regionally with a much lesser crowd, however, our chief executive officer rejected it and suggested to do it on a grand scale so that we can really spread the joy of CNY celebration to the underprivileged.

“While we are doing that, we are also hoping to set a brand new record with the Malaysian Book of Records for the biggest charity dinner ever hosted for the underprivileged,” GCH Retail (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd Corporate Affairs director Roseta Mohd Jaafar told theSun.

Roseta said the aim of the charity is not so much on entering into the MBR, but it is more towards providing an opportunity and venue for the underprivileged to feel the CNY celebration atmosphere as there will be various performances on that night including lion dance and fireworks.

“I think the dinner will be something to look forward to by them,” she added.

The charity dinner will be held at the Construction Industry Development Board Convention Centre in Cheras with the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin as the guest of honour.

Roseta said the dinner is part of the company’s corporate social responsibility.

“Apart from this, Giant is also partnering with MyKasih Foundation for its food aid programme by which we will provide food and supplies to the poor and the needy,” she said, adding Giant will make a certain amount of monetary donation to the foundation each time when there is an opening of a new Giant hypermarket or special charity event or during certain festive celebrations.

“After informing them the donation amount, the foundation will help us to identify and select the eligible recipients. A monthly allowance of RM80 will then be deposited into the selected recipients’ MyKad accounts for two years for them to shop for essential goods such as rice, bread and flour at participating Giant outlets,” she added.
