Seven cops in the dock

> Suspects face corruption and cheating charges

PETALING JAYA: A total of seven policemen were charged in various courts yesterday with corruption and cheating.

In SHAH ALAM, Bernama reports that a police inspector was charged in the sessions court with two counts of soliciting and receiving a bribe from a woman.

M. Krishnan, 33, who is based at South Klang district police headquarte­rs, claimed trial to both charges.

The charges are under Section 16(a)(B) and Section 17(a) of the Malaysian AntiCorrup­tion Commission Act 2009, respective­ly, and punishable under Section 24(1) of the same Act. It carries a jail term of up to 20 years and a fine of up to five times the amount of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher.

Judge Rozilah Salleh Hakim set April 3 for remention and RM24,000 as bail in one surety for both charges.

Also in SHAH ALAM, three policemen, a sergeant and two corporals from the Narcotic Criminal Investigat­ion Division, were charged with obtaining RM5,000 from a woman as an incentive not to take action against a mechanic in 2015.

Sgt Azahar Adon, 56, Cpl Rosli Bali, 55, and Cpl Yusof Ali, 60, who is now retired, claimed trial to a joint charge at a sessions court yesterday.

The charge is under Section 17 (a) of the MACC Act 2009, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum of 20 years’ jail or a fine.

Judge Asmadi Hussin granted RM8,000 bail for each and ordered the accused to report to the MACC office monthly.

The judge fixed May 10 for case management and set June 5 for trial.

In BUTTERWORT­H, three policemen were charged in the sessions court with corruption and cheating.

Cpl Shamsudin Abbas, 56, and Cpl Syed Mohd Bakkri Syed Ismail, 52, from the Traffic Enforcemen­t and Investigat­ion Department, Central Seberang Perai district police headquarte­rs, were charged with soliciting a bribe of RM2,000 from S. Danial, 23, as inducement not to seize the lorry driven by Danial which had an expired road tax.

They were charged under Section 17 (a) of the MACC Act 2009 which carries a maximum 20-year prison sentence and fine not less than five times the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher.

Judge Sitarun Nisa Abdul Aziz fixed RM6,000 bail in one surety for each of the accused and set April 10 for mention.

In a separate charge, a police sergeant attached with the Kulim Criminal Investigat­ion Department also claimed trial to a cheating charge.

Jamil Bidin, 55, was charged with deceiving Mohd Sanasat Abdul Rani, 33, by soliciting RM2,000 as an inducement into making him believe that he will assist Mohd Sanasat to appoint a counsel for his son.

The offence under Section 420 of Penal Code read together with Section 28 (1)(a) of the MACC Act 2009 carries a maximum 10year prison sentence and whipping and and/or fine upon conviction.
