KUALA KUBU BARU: Screams of “I don’t want to live any more” pierced the already tense halls of the Kuala Kubu Baru Hospital yesterday as cries of anguish and despair came from a relative who only a few hours earlier had lost six family members in a highway crash.

The family of six, the youngest of whom was a 13-year-old boy, died after their MPV was crushed by a trailer that skided out of control on the North-South Expressway. It was learnt that the family were on their way to Bidor for the Qingming festival.

The deceased were identified as 46-yearold Lam Wai Loon, who was driving; his father Lam Leong Choy, 76; Wai Loon’s wife Wong Check Lee, 53; his brother Lam Wai Keat, 35; and the couple’s sons Lam Jie Yang, 19, and Lam Jie Hong, 13. The driver of the trailer lorry was unhurt. According to Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (operations) Mohd Sani Harul, it is believed that one of the trailer’s tyres had burst, sending the lorry careening into the family’s car, which was travelling in the same direction.

The dead were from Puchong, Selangor. The accident occurred at Km403 of the NorthSouth expressway near Hulu Selangor at about 7.30am yesterday.

Hulu Selangor police chief Supt R. Supramaniam said the 27-year-old trailer driver from Kedah has been detained to assist investigations.

Checks later found he has eight driving offences and a criminal records under the Drug Dependants (Treatment and Rehabilitation) Act 1983.

Supramaniam said the case has been classified under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless driving.
