Carlsberg’s environment-sustaining efforts

-

CARLSBERG Malaysia, with the entire Carlsberg Group of companies, joined millions around the world in switching off non-essential lights for an hour to spread awareness about climate change. In Malaysia, the initiative was carried out at Carlsberg’s brewery and warehouse in Shah Alam, as well as its sales offices across the nation.

CHOOSE TO CHANGE This is the 10th consecutive year Carlsberg Malaysia has pledged its commitment to the initiative. The brewer also recently published its 2016 sustainability statement in its 2016 Annual Report, which details environmental sustaining initiatives conducted in areas of energy, carbon and water. The statement reported that Carlsberg: expended an overall energy performance improvement of 3% in CO2 emissions; achieved a 4% decrease of 9.48 KWh/hl in electricity consumption; and reduced thermal energy consumption by 5% lower or 20.3 KWh/hl compared to 2015. FOR THE BETTER The change from paper carton packaging to a lighter plastic shrink wrap encasement in 2016, contributed to lower CO2 emissions. This has helped reduce a total of 261 tonnes of paper waste. Carlsberg also reported to have recycled and refilled 90% of its total returnable glass bottles to minimise the need to use new bottles and resources.

A yeast press machine was also purchased to improve the performance of the waste water treatment plant by separating water and sludge at a higher efficiency level. This has improved Carlsberg’s water efficiency consumption in 2016, bringing figures down to 3.7hl per hl of water used to brew one hl of beer.

GLOBAL GROUP EFFORT “In 2016, we continued our efforts to improve our sustainability performance in our production plant by further reducing energy consumption, CO2 emissions and water usage. Reinforcing our purpose-driven culture of ‘Brewing for a better today and tomorrow’, we aim to deliver environmental performance that supports UN Sustainable Development Goals – SDG 6.4 by 2030 to substantially increase water-use efficiency and ensure sustainable withdrawals and supply of freshwater to address water scarcity, and SDG 7.3 by 2030, to double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency,” said Carlsberg Malaysia supply chain director Piotr Zaj c ( pix).

More about Carlsberg’s environment sustaining efforts and initiatives is available on its website.
