Engineering for tomorrow

-

With its multi-disciplinary fields and lucrative career prospects, engineering has become an appealing area of study for most students. However, a successful career in the field first begins with a strong base, and students will be able to find that at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia.

A leading name in the industry, HeriotWatt is ranked 34th in the UK and fourth in Scotland, and placed in the top 10 in the UK for Chemical Engineering and Building among others, according to the Complete University Guide 2017.

The university’s pathway to its engineering programme begins with its Foundation in Science programme which is designed to prepare and equip students with the necessary set of skills that will smoothen their progression into their undergraduate studies, and later the working world.

Chooi Li is pursuing Heriot-Watt’s Mechanical Engineering programme, and chose the university’s Foundation in Science programme as her starting point.

“The depleting of fossil fuel sources has resulted in various countries seeking out alternative energy sources.

“I hope to be part of the effort to effect change in this area, and this is why I decided to pursue Mechanical Engineering.

“I chose to do my foundation studies here as the university is well known for its engineering courses and is ranked among the top in the UK. The Foundation syllabus covered not just engineering subjects, but also additional subjects such as Study Skills,” she explains.

Adding further, “My student experience so far has been exciting and educational. The campus provides sufficient resources and the lecturers are very helpful. The university is also getting livelier with various events and activities that help create a sense of belonging within the campus.”

Another unique advantage offered is its inter-campus transfer programme: Go Global. Having an international study experience in today’s globalised world has become a highly sought after attribute. Its presence in the UK, Dubai and Malaysia allows Heriot-Watt to offer students a global education.

Through this programme, students can transfer to their campus of choice as long as their programme is offered there. What’s more, the use of the same curriculum in all campuses ensures a seamless transfer process. – Alex Chai
