DIANE Jamieson is the programme leader for a range of undergraduate finance courses at Sheffield Hallam University, UK. She is a qualified accountant with more than 25 years’ experience working for KPMG. Her professional experience includes working in fraud investigation and dispute advisory services as a forensic accountant.
She talks about the advantages of studying forensic accounting.
What is forensic accounting? Forensic accounting is an area of accountancy in which you use financial knowledge to investigate or analyse financial transactions. Many people think forensic accounting focuses only on fraud investigations but, in reality, this is only a fraction of the career opportunities available. Areas of work which would be considered forensic accounting also include family disputes, such as divorce settlements, personal injury claims or profitloss calculations.
What are the advantages of studying forensic accounting over other finance courses? Studying forensic accounting is useful for all areas of work in finance and accounting because it teaches you to spot the warning signs for any financial discrepancies. There are many institutions offering general courses in accounting so specific skills in forensic accounting will help you to differentiate yourself in a job application.
Why study forensic accounting at Sheffield Hallam University? We are one of very few UK universities offering courses specifically in forensic accounting at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Both courses are accredited by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA). If you study BA (Hons) Forensic Accounting, you’ll have the opportunity to complete a 12-month placement during your studies. If you want to begin your course in September 2017, we are offering applicants from South East Asia a £3,000 (RM16,920) discount on their firstyear of study.
