Cops may make more arrests over navy cadet’s death

- BY ASHWIN KUMAR

SHAH ALAM: Police have not ruled out the possibility of making more arrests in relation to the case involving navy cadet Zulfarhan Osman Zulkarnain, who died after he was suspected to have been abused.

Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Seri Abdul Samah Mat said the police were also tracking down several other individuals to assist in the investigations.

“So far, 36 students aged between 20 and 21 have been remanded until June 9 to assist in the investigations and we are not ruling out further arrests,” he told reporters when met after a pinning of ranks ceremony for more than 300 personnel and officers, as well as an Excellence Service Award certificate presentation, at the state police contingent headquarters officers’ mess yesterday.

He also refuted claims of a bomoh being sought by police over reports that he (the bomoh) had identified Zulfarhan as the one who stole one of the suspects’ laptop, which allegedly led to the assault.

Abdul Samah said his men are also looking into claims that Zulfarhan was accused of stealing a laptop belonging to one of his friends.

However, he said they have not received a police report on this.

Meanwhile, Selangor Criminal Investigation Department chief SAC Fadzil Ahmat said they have seized several items as part of the probe.

Fadzil declined to reveal the number of witnesses that have been interviewed so far, but said the doctors who had treated Zulfarhan were among them.

The Malaysian National Defence University, meanwhile, has said an investigation board has also been set up by the armed forces to look into the case.

It said in a statement yesterday that the board was formed as Zulfarhan was under the purview of the armed forces’ military training academy.

“Due to this, we are unable to comment directly on the case. However we believe that a thorough investigation is being carried out,” said the university.
