NILAI: A police inspector and his two older brothers, both rank-and-file policemen, were injured when they were beaten up by a group of Pakistani carpet traders at the Nilai 3 wholesale centre on Sunday following an argument.

Eight Pakistani men were arrested soon after the incident.

Nilai police chief Supt Zaldino Zaludin said investigations showed that the policemen had gone with their family to a shop owned by a Pakistani to buy carpets at about 3.30pm.

He said an argument broke out between one of the brothers and a shop assistant when the former negotiated the price of a carpet.

Zaldino said following the argument, the policemen and their family walked out of the shop.

He said as they were about to leave in their cars, about 10 Pakistani men, one whom was armed with a piece of wood surrounded them and ordered the police inspector out.

Zaldino said when the police officer stepped out, a fight broke out.

Patrol cars and a team from the district CID arrived at the scene soon after and managed to control the situation.

Zaldino said the three policemen and two Pakistani men suffered injuries such as bruises, cuts and swellings as a result of the fight.

At an event in Bukit Aman yesterday, Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Noor Rashid Ibrahim said police are investigating the cause of the altercation.

“If we find that the policemen were at fault, then we will take action against them. As for the Pakistanis, they need to know there are laws in our country and they should respect them. Action will also be taken against them if they are found to have broken laws,” he said, adding that the case is being investigated for rioting.
