IWK recovers 87% of RM8b

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) has recovered 87% of the RM8 billion owed to it in sewerage bills dating back to 1997, said its acting chief operating officer Mohamed Haniffa Abdul Hamid.

He said this was achieved through the consortium’s proactive efforts to enhance public awareness on the importance of sewerage services, through various programmes that included meeting customers, sending reminder letters and organising awareness campaigns.

“IWK does not simply take stern action, which will cause inconvenience to customers. But I would like to stress that settling bills promptly is very important.”

Mohamed Haniffa said although IWK was plagued by a high amount of outstanding bills, the national sewerage company was able to stay active for more than 20 years, thanks to the efficiency of its management and staff.

IWK has managed to continue providing its services at a low domestic charge of RM8 per month which also proved the government’s commitment in putting the people’s welfare first, Bernama reported.

“We have been charging (very low fees) for the past 20 years. Not once has the rate been reviewed. The government played a big role, especially by providing allocations for IWK operations.”

He said the consortium had always ensured its public sewage treatment plants and public sewerage pipeline network were well-maintained to protect the environment and the public from water-borne diseases such as typhoid, cholera and polio.
