Brash, flashy and sparkly
IT may be a cliche, but clean and wellmanicured fingernails always set the right tone. Nail polish that matches your skin colour is a very effective way to make an impression.
But fashion wouldn't be fashion without making the odd bold statement, and bright colours such as green and blue are a trend.
"This year, nail polish is really taking off," says Frank Schaeberle of Germany's VKE cosmetics trade association. "Colours that are brash, flashy and sparkly are in. Neon colours in green, blue or pink are at the heart of this trend."
Fashion and cosmetics stylist Ritchie Karkowski agrees. "The ocean colours of green and blue are the main colours to watch out for," she says. "Green is going to become popular, along with soft coral tones. Purple, on the other hand, will not play a role anymore."
Vesna Pejak, from Studio Pink Nail in Berlin, says there are also great colours to choose if you don't want to make a big statement. "If you prefer the classic colours, you can go for bright berry tones or pastels." These softer colours are almost as wellestablished as the classic red nail polish. Karkowski says classic red with a hint of orange is a new colour to try out. Chrome nails are also proving more popular than ever before. As the name implies, chrome nails consist of gloss in metallic colours. But no matter which colour you prefer, Karkowski says it's essential to match your nail polish colour to your outfit.
"What always looks nice is when there's harmony between your polish and the clothes you're wearing," says Karkowski.
"A dress with red flowers goes perfectly with red nail polish. If you're wearing washed-out jeans, turquoise will look super."
Another trend at the moment is full-cover nail polish – painting the entire nail in just one colour. Experts say the previous trend of coating the side or tip of the nails with another colour is over. – dpa
