6-figure pay for ‘defender of Earth’

PE T ALI NG JAYA: Political analyst Abdul Razak Baginda ( pix) has denied that he had been charged i n France over the purchase of Scorpene submarines in 2002. A statement released by his office on Tuesday night stressed that only a formal i nvestigati­on had t aken place. “It must be emphasised that it’s an ongoing inquiry and no formal charges in a court of law have been brought against any individual(s),” it said. French news reports on July 19 and Aug 1 stated that individual­s involved in the submarine purchase WASHINGTON: Nasa is hiring someone who can defend Earth from alien contaminat­ion.

The full-time role of “planetary protection officer” will involve ensuring that humans in space do not contaminat­e planets and moons, as well as alien matter infecting Earth.

The pay is a six-figure salary, as much as US$187,000 (RM793,000) a year plus benefits.

The job post reads: “Planetary protection is concerned with the avoid- have been “charged”.

“These reports have been carried in other mass media and are misleading,” said the statement which stressed that the term “charged” in the context of the French legal process is different from Malaysia.

The term “charged” in the context of the inquiry means placing the said individual­s under “formal investigat­ion”, the statement read.

In Malaysia, a person suspected of a crime is investigat­ed, and if there is sufficient evidence, the person is then charged in a court of law.

“The universal principle in any ance of organic-constituen­t and biological contaminat­ion in human and robotic space exploratio­n.”

The three-year position – with a chance to extend it to five years – was created after the US signed the Outer Space Treaty of 1967, vowing to “pursue studies of outer space […] and conduct exploratio­n of them so as to avoid their harmful contaminat­ion and also adverse changes in the environmen­t of the Earth resulting from the introducti­on of extraterre­strial criminal proceeding is ‘a person is innocent until proven guilty’.

“Any criminal prosecutio­n has to be based on evidence and not hearsay or narratives. Dr Razak Baginda has not been charged in any court of law in France,” the statement said.

The statement added that Abdul Razak welcomed the French inquiry as he has not committed any crime of corruption or breached any laws in the matter.

Candidates will be required to travel frequently, but like any job, there will be a significan­t amount of emails, proposals and other reading.

The position requires “demonstrat­ed skills in diplomacy that will result in win-win solutions during extremely difficult and complex multilater­al discussion­s”. The new hire will also receive “secret” security clearance.
