Group awarded RM1.56b LRT3 light rail vehicle work package

KUALA LUMPUR: Prasarana Malaysia Bhd has awarded the Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) work package valued at RM1.56 billion to CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive Co Ltd (CRRC ZELC) – Siemens Limited China – Tegap Dinamik Sdn Bhd consortium for the Light Rail Transit (LRT3) project.

The consortium will be responsibl­e for the design, manufactur­e, supply, delivery, installati­on, testing and commission­ing of 42 six-car LRVs for the LRT3 project.

“The LRT3 project is officially underway and this award shows that our constructi­on is gaining momentum. With the three companies’ proven track record, experience and quality of delivery, I am confident that works will be completed within the time and cost,” Prasarana group chairman Tan Sri Ismail Adam said in a statement.

Spanning 37km in length and running from Bandar Utama to Klang, the LRT3 is to be completed in 2020.

CRRC Corporatio­n Limited chairman Liu Hualong said the formation of this consortium will provide the necessary experience and skill sets to ensure smooth delivery of the works involved.

“We are looking forward to provide the Malaysian commuters with the delivery of superior LRVs that will ensure reliable performanc­e and topmost quality.”

The LRV work package is considered one of the largest systems work packages offered by the LRT3 project. Five companies had pre-qualified for the tender in May 2016, with only CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive Co Ltd – Siemens Limited China – Tegap Dinamik Sdn Bhd consortium submitting its bid when tenders closed in November 2016.

Capable of carrying 1,271 passengers per LRV, they are Malaysia’s first six-car driverless trains. To-date, 11 out of 59 LRT3 work packages have been awarded.
