Paying homage to architecture

- BY MARK MATHEN VICTOR

H&M-OWNED, London-based fashion brand, COS’ Autumn/ Winter 2017 collection focuses on bold, architectural designs, and muted, industrial colours, with a large focus being spent on experimenting with geometry and pushing the boundaries of the classical aesthetic.

Like the German Expressionist creative movement that gave birth to unrealistic, pointed, distorted geometry in silent films, COS is attempting something similar for fashion with its Autumn/Winter clothing line, melding sharp geometry, angular designs, and boxed upper body frames being juxtaposed with the bell-bottoms design of the ‘60s and ‘70s.

The results are certainly striking, and never not interesting.

Inspired by abstract art and design, the Autumn/Winter line is a radical take on classic pieces that is certain to not just turn heads, but to do so without compromising on the comfort of the wearer. The angular women’s line, coming in either loose or semi-tight designs, are based on classic pieces infused with modern sensibilities; the deep red leather shoulder bag comes with a removable strap that turns the item into a purse for the woman on the go. If the women’s Autumn/ Winter line does not strike your fancy, then the clothing set aside for men might. Defying gender conventions, COS’ Autumn/Winter line of men’s clothing seem to go rather well even for those of the opposite gender, with the bulky upper half being more than snugly fit for women and their traditionally smaller frames, while never dropping in masculinity when worn – as intended – by men. The Autumn/ Winter line by COS strikes and maintains the appropriate delicate balance between the different elements at play in each design, and the collection will launch this month.
