A way of life
> World’s first fashion design school from France is in Malaysia
ESMOD Kuala Lumpur was established as another one of The One Academy’s commitment to provide yet another distinctive education experience under its wing with its Diploma in Fashion Design & Pattern Making programme. With 25 years of creative excellence, The One Academy and ESMOD Kuala Lumpur became part of the ESMOD legacy with 170 years of history.
Renowned internationally, ESMOD is the first and oldest fashion design school in the world, founded in 1841 by Alexis Lavigne, master tailor and a royal purveyor. With a unique teaching method – making patterns directly on the “Lavigne Bust” (also known as the draping mannequin), Lavigne laid the cornerstone for a successful teaching system that is still implemented today. Lavigne also invented the measuring tape, rulers, set squares and French curves.
Including Malaysia, the ESMOD network expands to 21 different schools in 14 distinct countries across the globe. With almost two centuries of fashion education experience, the network of ESMOD International has been transmitting its “French fashion expertise” that foresees contemporary fashion events and evolving market needs. This mode of transmission has found its way to this budding nation with limitless potential for the fashion industry through ESMOD KL, providing the opportunity for enthusiasts to experience an international fashion education right here in the homeland.
“Celebrating fashion as a way of life, to make cultures and its differences interact, has been ESMOD’s mission since it was founded,” according to ESMOD International General Manager, Christine Walter-Bonini. “Fashion is to explore, to discover, to anticipate, to imagine, and to create. Learning how to observe and to analyse is essential in order to meet customers’ demands.”
Every year, around 1,000 students from 50 countries enrol with ESMOD’s extensive fashion programmes. With more students expressing their interest in pursuing a career in fashion, they can now do it locally at ESMOD Kuala Lumpur and build their careers as fashion designers, stylists, fashion illustrators, fashion editors, costume designers, pattern makers, retail merchandisers, product managers, fashion photographers, apparel business owners, fashion coordinators, and many more.
Following the same programme established in Paris, The One Academy prioritises that its school of fashion design ESMOD Kuala Lumpur closely implements similar wisdom, knowledge and artistry in educating its students, akin to ESMOD headquarters and schools around the world. This aims to nurture future designers who are skilled enough to flare-up the fashion world such as Thierry Mugler, an ESMOD graduate, who is now a prominent fashion and perfume designer.
ESMOD KL sets a high bar of teaching where fashion design & pattern making modules are mandatory to obtain outstanding results. The programme is led by experienced lecturers, equipped with upto-date fashion industry knowledge, from Europe, such as France, Italy, and other nations flourished with upscale fashion.
Keeping at par with The One Academy’s Masters Train Masters teaching philosophy, the ESMOD Kuala Lumpur Fashion Design & Pattern Making programme equally focuses on ensuring that students will be able to receive learning opportunities from the best, directly from industry experts, so that they will be ready to seize the industry when they complete their studies. In providing a global exposure, upon completion of studies, students can continue their studies at an advanced level in any of the ESMOD schools all around the world.
Therefore, the programme incorporates practical coaching approach that will certainly serve as an essential platform for young designers who aspire to achieve greater recognition and success in the world of fashion. Students will experience professional and attentive teaching methods, fashion designing, pattern drafting and other practical training while understanding the tools of the trade, application and technical quality in the fashion industry as perfect as the French fashion. Moreover, the programme incorporates the latest international fashion trends, ensuring that graduates are abreast with contemporary styles and designs.
During the programme, students can expect to learn the art of applying creative skills and creative thinking to execute exemplary haute couture fashion. To emulate the experts, students will get used to designing garments using upcycled techniques and materials. Students will also incorporate elements found in architecture, nature, innovations and patterns into their fashion work; part of the programme also enable students the chance to visit prominent companies and manufacturers to explore various types of fabrication and embellishments used for hands-on sessions in sewing and draping.
In mirroring a conducive educational setting similar to that of France, through its comprehensive syllabus and French-fluent lecturers, students will have the chance to take classes in learning how to communicate and converse using French language as a part of their course.
