Caring for your hair this summer

- BY SARAH YOUNG

WE would never step out in the sun without applying sunscreen to our skin and the same should go for our hair too. While it might not burn in the same way as our skin, it can still get damaged by harmful UV rays so it's important to coat your tresses with a protective product – especially if it's colour treated, reports The Independent.

Nowadays, you can pick up a host of hair products that offer UV protection such as Aveda's Sun Care Protective Hair and Bumble and Bumble's Invisible Oil Primer.

Similarly, you also have to consider the effect that chlorine can have on your hair and while some advocate wetting it with regular water before taking a dip, Philip Kingsley's Swimcap is a no-brainer. Not only does it protect from UV and the harsh effects of chlorine and salt water but it will leave your locks in better condition than before.

Lower the heat Blasting your hair with a dryer is the last thing you feel like doing when the temperature soars so summer is the perfect time to leave your hair to dry naturally.

Now is the time to let your products go to work. The most important thing here is to prevent your hair from going fluffy so work a wave cream, oil or even a leave-in conditioner into the lengths of your tresses and then leave it well alone. Top tip: avoid using too much product as this will weight it down.

Fight the Frizz Humid weather does nothing for our hair but before you give up hope and sport a ponytail for the rest of the summer, there are some things you can do to help.

The first is to invest in a moisturising shampoo conditioner. Just as your body needs water to survive, so does your hair, so replenishing its moisture levels will keep your hair looking silky soft.

But, if conditioner alone isn't enough to tame your flyaways you might want to use a hair oil or serum. These multi-tasking products help to repair parched strands with some also offering protection from heat and other harmful factors.

Simply rub into the palm of your hands and distribute evenly over the strands. Avoid applying to the roots if possible though as this can cause your hair to look greasy.

Alternatively, if your hair is in a real state using an intensive hair mask once a week will help to keep hair strong and frizz-free all summer long.
