New app to help police fight crime
KUALA LUMPUR: Members of the public are now encouraged to disseminate information on crime or make complaints to the police by using a special application called the Volunteer Smartphone Patrol (VSP).
Deputy Director of the Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department (JPJKK) ACP Norhalid Kimi said at Bukit Aman yesterday that the VSP app will enable the public to work with the police to crack down on crime.
“This is a rebranding of Rakan Cop where its current members will automatically be using VSP, and to this date we have around 698,487 new and old members who are giving information to the police,” he said.
Since the launch of the app by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak on March 25, Norhalid said they have received 8,504 reports and complaints about criminal activities and misdemeanours in the country.
With this app, reports can be made by uploading photos, videos and even audio clips and coordinates of the incidents in real time.
“Every report received will be sent to the control centres in 14 contingents across the country that are in operation for 24 hours a day and will be assessed by them,” he said.
According to Norhalid, the information that can be channeled to the police covers various types of misconduct such as crime, drugs, traffic, natural disasters and many more are welcomed. – by Timothy Achariam
