GEORGE TOWN: Police seized RM245,300 worth of drugs and detained a man and his foreign wife during a raid at a drug laboratory on Monday afternoon.

Penang police chief Datuk Chuah Ghee Lye said the 31-year-old local and the 27year-old Vietnamese national were arrested during the 4.55pm raid at an apartment in Prai.

He said the raiding team found two black plastic bags containing 10 packets of heroin weighing 4,533g.

He said investigators were led to the upper apartment’s floor where the drug processing lab was found.

He said police seized 13 packets of heroin weighing 5,341g, five packets of caffeine weighing 7,897g and a packet of heroin base weighing 4.15g and various processing apparatus.

“Two luxury cars and RM7,175 cash were also seized,” he said at a press conference yesterday.

Chuah said checks showed the man had 12 previous drug related offences and his urine tested positive for drugs but not the woman.

He said the woman was in the country for the past two years and possessed the proper documents.

“We are also looking for other accomplices,” he added but did not elaborate.

Both suspects have been remanded until Aug 28 to facilitate investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries the mandatory death penalty.

In a separate development, a 23-year- old man was charged on Tuesday for robbing the sister-in-law of Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.

The man was held on Aug 17 with two others but the two have been released and have become prosecution witnesses.
