Right job skills vital

> Abilities of individuals need to match current demands, says HRDF

CYBERJAYA: Retrenchment is not a result of an economic downturn but an issue of people not possessing the right skills, said the Human Resources Development Fund (HRDF).

“Retrenchment happen because people needed to have a different set of skills from the time they were first employed. The dynamics of the work force in many sectors have shifted, be it in the information technology or manufacturing sector. People now need to be re-skilled for them to be able to meet current job demands,” its chief executive Datuk C.M. Vignaesvaran Jeyandran told theSun at a ceremony for its Graduates Enhancement Programme for Employability yesterday.

Vignaesvaran added that those who have been retrenched and are currently unemployed can seek assistance from HRDF.

“We have staff to assist them. There will be an assessment done to see what skills they possess, and the skills they would require to fit into the job market. We will then match them to the necessary course and assist them in securing a job after the course.”

About 850,000 people, including fresh graduates, have been assisted by HRDF in equipping themselves with the necessary skills and about 95% secure jobs after they complete the course.

Fresh graduates who are unable to secure jobs after they graduate can join courses HRDF offers to improve their opportunities in landing a job.

“We work with private firms and multinational companies to bridge the gaps.”
