Former Olympian’s nightmare

As a former national hockey player who has competed in various national and internatio­nal events including the Olympic Games back in 1982, Colin Sta Maria, then 55 years, looked at the flight of stairs before him and his heart sank. His knee has been giving him problems since he was in his late 40s. Until he experience­d arthritis in his knee, Colin never truly understood the frustratio­n of not being able to do something as simple as going up a flight of stairs. Even walking was a challenge. Although Colin no longer plays competitiv­e hockey, he still enjoys sports and takes great pleasure in his runs. However, his knee becomes stiff and hurts terribly after a cherished jog so much so that he had to give that up too. As an active sportsman Colin confessed to feeling extremely down, not being able to go about his life doing whatever he wishes. breaking down faster than they can re-build. As a result, the joints degenerate and lose functional­ity over time.
