- BY CHARLES RAMENDRAN AND AMAR SHAH MOHSEN

KUALA L UMPUR: New Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Datuk Seri Mohamed Fuzi Harun is making the fight against terror one of his main priorities. For starters, 350 more personnel will be deployed to the Special Branch counter-terrorism unit, he said.

Mohamed Fuzi, 58, was named as the 11th IGP, succeeding Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar, who retired yesterday. His appointment came as a surprise to many in the force, as by tradition, the serving deputy IGP usually moves up.

Prior to this, Mohamed Fuzi was the Special Branch director.

Khalid handed over duties to Mohamed Fuzi at a ceremony witnessed by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi at the Police Training Centre in Jalan Semarak here yesterday.

Speaking at t he ceremony, Mohamed Fuzi said he was surprised by the appointment.

“It was definitely unexpected. But I have to carry out the trust given to me by the government. I will do my best to deliver the expectations of the government and the public,” he said.

Ahmad Zahid said the decision to appoint Mohamed Fuzi as the new IGP was made after a meeting of the Police Commission chaired by him.

Tan Sri Noor Rashid Ibrahim remains as deputy IGP but will get a pay hike. He is due for retirement in March next year.
