‘ Revoke his Datukship’
> Council of Federal Datuks Malaysia calls for suspect in beating of Rela officers to be stripped of title
PETALING JAYA: The Council of Federal Datuks Malaysia has called for the revocation of the “Datuk Sri” title of an individual who allegedly assaulted three Rela officers last Friday.
Its president, Tan Sri Danny Ooi, said the council was saddened by the incident and reminded those bestowed with honorary titles to behave accordingly.
“The Sultan should take away (the title). It is not right (to act in such a way) whether you are a Datuk Sri or Datuk. I believe it is right to take away their title if they had committed any criminal (act),” he said at the council’s 15th Anniversary Charity Dinner yesterday.
It is learnt that the man, whose vehicle was obstructing traffic outside a temple in Ampang, Selangor, was told by the Rela officers on duty to move his car.
As a result of the beatings, one officer suffered bruises and a black eye, while another was hospitalised.
Ooi confirmed that the Datuk Sri in question is not a member of the council, adding that the council consisted of individuals who were conferred titles by the Yang di- Pertuan Agong.
On a vetting system to be put in place for conferring titles, Ooi said a screening process had already been implemented for years.
“It is under the jurisdiction of the royalty. They have their own terms, rules and regulations. It is up to the respective state governments to check,” he said, adding it is up to the state secretaries to advise the state ruler.
Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin was the guestof-honour at the charity dinner, during which the council presented contributions totalling RM30,000 to six charity homes.
