Wear them right

-

SOCKS with open shoes or heels is a trend that’s been popular in street style circles for a while now. But one false move and you could risk looking like a German grandpa.

Style consultant Inka MuellerWinkelmann has some tips on how to get it right. She says check is this season’s go-to print, and socks are no exception.

Red stockings are also in, but the fashion expert’s advice is to go for more muted berry tones. “If the red in the stockings is too loud, you might end up looking like a stork.”

Her advice: “Match the colour or pattern of the socks with something else in your outfit - for example, in a scarf or in a handbag.”

In addition, matte socks and stockings are a better choice than shiny or sparkly fabrics, she says, as these can make your legs look shorter.

The same applies to bold patterns. “That’s why a high heel looks better, because it makes your legs look longer,” Mueller-Winkelmann says.

“If you’re petite or plus size, it’s better to avoid patterns and instead stick to a single colour.” This makes your legs look longer and slimmer, she says. – dpa
