East coast floods rising

> More head to shelters in Kelantan and Terengganu

KOTA BARU: The floods in Kelantan have continued to worsen, sending more people to relief centres.

As of 5pm yesterday, the number of evacuees reached 11,341, up from 8,574 at 1pm, according to the Infobanjir applicatio­n of the Social Welfare Department.

All the evacuees are being housed at 101 relief centres in nine districts – Kota Baru, Pasir Mas, Tumpat, Bachok, Tanah Merah, Pasir Puteh, Kuala Krai, Machang and Jeli.

Pasir Mas had the highest number of evacuees with 7,035. Kota Baru was next with 1,499, followed by Tanah Merah (835), Pasir Puteh (819), Bachok (313), Machang (385), Kuala Krai (282), Tumpat (133) and Jeli (40).

The infobanjir.water.gov.my portal of the Department of Drainage and Irrigation (DID) said the level of Sungai Golok in Rantau Panjang, had risen to 10.61m as at noon yesterday. The danger point is 9m.

The ebanjir.kelantan.gov.my portal of Kelantan reported that all roads were still accessible.

Rain, at times heavy, was reported in several areas in the state up to noon yesterday.

In KUALA TERENGGANU, flood victims in Terengganu had increased to 2,432 as of 8am yesterday, compared to 2,201 the day before.

The State Disaster Management Committee secretaria­t said 15 relief centres were opened in seven districts, taking the total number of relief centres opened in the state to 64.

In Besut, the number of victims rose to 842 compared to 637. Hulu Terengganu did not see much changes as only one new victim was recorded, taking the total to 792.

Setiu saw a slight decrease with 378 compared to 411, while in Dungun, the number remained at 165.

The flood situation in Marang and Kuala Nerus was unchanged with 71 and 126 victims respective­ly.

In Kuala Terengganu, the latest district to be hit, 59 were placed at one relief centre compared to 63 last night.

The DID said no rivers in Terengganu were above the danger level as of 8.30am yesterday. – Bernama
