Surviving the family inquisition

You can, for example, say: “I earn enough to be able to continue my favourite hobby. Do you know much about it?”

However, if your hobby is sports cars, fancy yachts, or travelling around the world for social media likes and shares, that is just bragging. So be modest.

However, what is a friend or relative if not persistent.

After not getting a straight answer about your job, they may switch to asking about the industry you are working in: “Is it profitable?”, “Is there a future?”, and also, “Can you make much money in your industry?”.

Instead of giving them a lecture, LinkedIn suggests that you tell them how you got into the industry, why you love what you do, and share how you find the job fulfilling. Also, share with them some of your achievements and future goals. Undeterred by your parry, they might follow up with something like: “Have you been promoted this year?” Do not let this question put you down. Instead, share with them some of your career highlights from last year and your aspirations for this year. Shift the conversation from promotions and pay-rises to developing new skills and achieving other more meaningful successes.

The final blow will come in the form of a comparison between you and someone they consider more successful, like another family member.

If you have survived this long, it is perhaps the perfect time for a riposte.

LinkedIn suggests you celebrate the successes of others, but you can also reinforce your aspirations and even ambitions.

Finally, do not let these questions get you down or spoil your festive fun.

By making these tips your own, perhaps then, they will begin to understand your passions, your job and your idea of success.

Alternatively, after witnessing your skills in deflecting their questions, they will finally leave you alone … that is, until the next family reunion comes around.
