A future in engineering, computing or science
> First City UC introduces two new programmes aligned with the nation’s aim to achieve regional IoT hub status
SCIENTISTS investigate that which already is; engineers create that which has never been, according to Albert Einstein. That said, nearly everything that can be used has been shaped in one way or another by an engineer, and a career in engineering comes off as diverse and innovative, considering the latest technology advancements.
Gartner Inc, a world-leading American research and advisory firm providing information technology-related insights for IT, reported there was an increase in the use of mobile applications and smartphone users at the end of 2017. This reveals that there is tremendous growth in the demand for knowledge and skills in mobile computing.
In July 2015, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, with its applied research agency MIMOS, launched a nation-wide Internet of Things (IoT) roadmap designed as a guideline for IoT development. It is expected to create 14,270 high-skilled employment opportunities by 2020. In order to drive the country’s push to become a regional IoT hub, Malaysia will need more graduates in the field of networking and security.
On that account, First City University College’s (First City UC) Faculty of Engineering & Computing has introduced two new programmes – Bachelor of Information Technology (Mobile Computing) (Hons) and Bachelor of Information Technology (Networking & Security) (Hons).
The Bachelor of Information Technology (Mobile Computing) (Hons) degree highlights the abilities of wireless technology in connecting and using shared information and application software through wireless computing and communication devices. There is a wide gap between supply and demand in the market for career opportunities in mobile computing. Some of the career opportunities include that of a cross platform mobile developer, software development engineer and software engineer.
The Bachelor of Information Technology (Networking & Security) (Hons) degree however, focuses on the IoT, which is the next big thing in emerging technology. Through this programme, First City UC hopes to address the potential challenges in IoT, especially in networking and security. This will lead to career possibilities as a network engineer, computer-operations researcher and network architect.
Students can begin with the Foundation in Engineering, Science, & Technology programme which will open up three pathways – Engineering, Computing or Science. This provides more choice when progressing to the Bachelor’s Degree, with alternatives to take up a Bachelor of Information Technology (Networking & Security) (Hons), Bachelor of Information Technology (Mobile Computing) (Hons), Bachelor of Electrical Engineering with Honours, Bachelor of Software Engineering (Hons), Bachelor of Computer Science (Intelligent Systems) (Hons) or Bachelor of Information Systems (Hons) programme.
After completing a one-year intensive Foundation programme, students can proceed to Year 1 of a Bachelor Degree programme of their
