Two charged over murder at motel

SUNGAI PETANI: Two men were charged at the magistrate’s court yesterday with murdering a man at a motel in Sungai Petani.

The accused, M. Rinishwara­n, 19, and Sharudin Hassan Sha, 31, nodded when the charge was read before magistrate Adibah Husna Zainal. No plea was recorded. The two friends were jointly charged with murdering E. Muniandy, 53, at LA Motel, Jalan Kelab Cinta Sayang, Taman Bandar Baru, on March 4.

Rinishwara­n and Sharudin were alleged to have committed the offence between 6.10pm and 9.45pm. They were charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code which carries the maximum death penalty.

Deputy public prosecutor Muhammad Rifaei Mohamed Riyaludin prosecuted while the duo were unrepresen­ted.

Adibah fixed April 24 for mention and no bail was allowed.

It was reported that Muniandy’s body was found at a budget motel in Taman Bandar Baru. The victim from Kajang, Selangor had arrived at the hotel at 6pm with the two accused. At about 8pm, hotel staff heard a commotion from a room before the two men were seen leaving the motel in a hurry.

They were detained six hours after the incident, based on the hotel’s closed circuit television recording.

The motive of the murder was due to a stolen handphone, according to police.
