Voters cry foul over change in polling districts

SHAH ALAM: Several Klang residents are accusing the Election Commission (EC) of changing their voting constituencies without their knowledge or prior notice.

Klang MP Charles Santiago, who was present at the Selangor EC’s office with the affected voters to lodge a report, said at least 10 people had their polling districts changed from Klang to Taiping, Perak while their state seats were moved to either Kamunting or Aulong.

He said one of them, Eugene Oliver, 25, who lives in Klang, even found his name included in the latest electoral roll though he had never registered as a voter.

“We want to see the form that was filled requesting for the constituency change, when the changes were made, and most importantly, we want the EC to return the voters’ rights to vote in Klang,” he said.

Santiago revealed this to reporters after a 30-minute meeting with a representative from EC yesterday.

The DAP lawmaker said he was told that the appeal process would take up to three months, but demanded an answer by tomorrow, or face court action.

“If we don’t get an explanation or if the EC does not revert these voters to Klang by Friday, we will look at the legal recourse, including obtaining an injunction.

“The voters’ rights to vote have been denied by the EC. And let me assure you, these are not the only affected voters. There are a lot more we know who are just not willing to come.” forward.”
