Ex-PWD engineer in court for bribery

JOHOR BARU: A former senior engineer with the Kulai district Public Works Department (PWD) claimed trial to a bribery charge amounting to RM25,000 at the sessions court yesterday.

Azizan Mohamed Yasin, 39, is alleged to have received the money from Abu Baker A. Aziz, as an inducement to approve a project for upgrading the carpark facilities at his Kulai PWD office.

He committed the offence at a bank in Jalan Kebudayaan 4 in Taman University, Skudai at around 4.03pm on October 23, 2015.

He was charged under Section 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009, which carries a jail term of not more than 20 years and a fine of not less than RM10,000 or five times the amount of the bribe, whichever is higher, under Section 24 of the same Act.

Judge Kamarudin Kamsun set bail at RM10,000 and fixed May 22 for mention.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Khazrin Hafiz prosecuted while defence counsel Azi Azlin Zulkifli represente­d the accused.

In June last year, Azizan claimed trial to another corruption charge involving RM19,750. – by Low Sock Ken
