Study medicine in Johor

-

NEW developments are constantly taking place in the field of medicine and healthcare. With that, more effort is put into research and experience to spur groundbreaking technology and bring about better practices.

Staying on top is Newcastle University Medicine (NUMed) Malaysia, renowned as a provider of world-class medical education at “reduced costs”.

Since its inception in 1834 as a medical school in the UK, Newcastle University has been at the forefront of research and teaching. Today, it is among the top 20 in the UK in the areas of research and student experience.

NUMed Malaysia is located within EduCity in Johor, away from the stress and distraction of city life, still close enough to amenities and attractions. The modern, well-equipped and well-resourced campus is run by an accomplished faculty who deliver curriculum on the latest in medicine.

Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) student Izham Halid said that he chose to study at NUMed as it allowed him to be closer to home and family yet attain the same UK degree. Besides, students attain the same degree whether reading at the UK or Johor campus.

Said NUMed provost and CEO Prof Roger Barton, NuMed students have access to the best online resources, opportunity to attend regular continuing professional development sessions, and the uni practises interchanging of staff both virtually and physically among colleagues in UK.

“We offer all our staff an academic qualification in medical education, something that is very rare in Southeast Asia, and our specialists are continuously informed of our curriculum, which we constantly review,” Barton informed.

He also said that as medical education today is increasingly interactive and integrated.

The university has also incorporated the use of simulations to recreate the intensity of serious real life emergencies and improved the assessments of senior students to mirror actual practices.

Students are taught using the case-based approach instead of via problem-based learning; the former a more active and effective method.

High-fidelity simulators are utilised, complemented by a broad range of simulated patients. These allow students to acquire vital communication and interpersonal skills, invaluable tools once students graduate and venture into housemanship or practice.

NUMed spans across a modern designed purpose-built 5.5ha campus, alongside its network of associated clinics and hospitals. The university offers undergraduate programmes in Medicine (MBBS) and Biomedical Science (BSc) which are identical to that offered at Newcastle University in UK.

A one-year Foundation Certificate in Biological and Biomedical Sciences is also offered at NUMed. Successful completion of this course opens doors to the MBBS or BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science programme.

Rest assured that graduates of NUMed Malaysia will receive a reputable UK qualification from an internationally recognised university, and at a cost that is significantly lower than if studying in the UK.
