- BY IMRAN HILMY

GEORGE TOWN: A small group of about 20 people expressing support for the Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP), gathered outside the state legislative assembly building yesterday.

The group, which claimed to be factory workers from the Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone, carried placards and banners expressing support for the project.

Group spokesman Mohd Nasarudin Sultan said those who are against the project do not understand how bad the traffic situation is, especially for factory workers, adding that the traffic situation is a nightmare.

The group handed over a petition signed by 1,011 workers in support of the mega project to Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

They dispersed peacefully after 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, representatives from the Penang Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) also handed over a petition to Chow.

The petition containing 100 signatures urged the state government to expedite the PTMP project.

The petition was handed over by FMM vice-chairman Jimmy Ong.

The PTMP, a state-initiated project costing an estimated RM46 billion, features an undersea tunnel linking the island to the mainland, highways, LRT, monorail as well as extensive bus connectivity on both the island and the mainland.
