For a roaring good cause

- BY JASON LIM

Atiger is more than just an emblematic label on a bottle. It’s a living, breathing icon that’s on the verge of extinction due to loss of habitat to climate change, poaching and hunting – unless we do something about it.

That is why Tiger Beer and Pestle & Mortar Clothing, in collaboration with World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) have teamed up with four local artists Sean Lean, Kenji Chai, Julian Oh and Hugh Koh to create four designs for the limited Endangered Edition collection.

These distinctive designs aim to bring the image of the wild tigers’ plight to the forefront of fashion to make a statement while driving awareness to save these furry felines.

With only 260 pieces produced, these t-shirts are rare but still not as rare as the Malayan tigers; only an estimated number of 250 remain in the wild today. It is confrontational and uncomfortable, but it’s a number we cannot escape from, and without our help, neither can they.

Each of the four local artists behind the capsule collection have significant visual approaches with their designs, but they share a similar message.

Sean Lean’s faded and distressed nature of the artwork reflects dwindling numbers of the Malayan tigers. Kenji Chai centred his idea around the symbiosis and how the forest and wildlife come together as one in perfect balance.

At the heart of Julian Oh’s artwork is the relationship between parent and cub, and the potential dystopian future faced by the Malayan tigers. Pestle & Mortar Clothing’s cofounder Hugh Koh illustrates the daunting future of the Malayan tiger if we do not act to save it.

He said: “It is a privilege to be part of a meaningful cause, and given the current predicament wild tigers are in, we wanted to send a message to fans through the designs in the collection.”

Retailing at RM100 each, all proceeds from the collection which is made using Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) compliant organic cotton, will be contributed to WWF Malaysia in support of wild tiger conservation efforts.
