Japanese film fest starts in Klang Valley today

THE ANNUAL Japanese Film Festival returns once again to offer fans a cross-section of Japan’s diverse movie culture at selected GSC cinemas starting today.

The festival kicks off in the Klang Valley today till Sept 12, followed by Penang from Sept 13 to 16, Johor Baru from Sept 20 to 23, as well as Kuching and Kota Kinabalu from Oct 4 to 7.

Johor Baru is the latest city to be added to the festival rounds this year.

The festival presents 13 films from a variety of genres, including drama, suspense, documentar­y, and comedy.

The movies featured this year include Ramen Heads, Mixed Doubles, 3ft Ball & Souls, Born Bone Born, Chihayafur­u Part 3, Perfect World, Tremble All You Want, The 8-Year Engagement, Yakiniku Dragon, Her Sketchbook, We Make Antiques!, The Gift of Memory, and Memoirs of a Murder.

And to commemorat­e the 15th anniversar­y of the Japanese Film Festival in Malaysia this year, two special programmes have been added to this year’s lineup.

The first is the Chihayafur­u movie marathon (Parts 1-3), and special screenings of films that were shot in Japan by Malaysian filmmakers.

These films are Heart of Taiko (produced by Lydia Lubon); Fly Me to Minami (directed by Lim Kah Wai); and a screening of short films by Edmund Yeo.

There will also be a questionan­d-answer session with these filmmakers after each screening.
