A stitch in time

FOR those who want to set their look apart from mass-produced fashion, a new sewing machine is a great start. But there are few things to consider before making a purchase. Denim, silk or cotton? If you want to work on different fabrics with your sewing machine, you should use a variable, adjustable thread tension. In addition, the machine should ideally feature different fabric-specific needles and offers sufficient variation in stitch type, width and length.

The technical inspectors at certification agency Tuev Sued recommend you aim for a machine with handy features like a thread trimmer and rewind function.

Clearly marked threading also helps. On the other hand, an automatic threading aid is not absolutely necessary. It’s also good if a zipper foot is included, ideally in two variants: a concealed one and a nonconcealed one.

It’s also important that the reverse button is easily accessible, that the presser foot and needle can be easily changed and that the needle and thread are clearly visible during the sewing. Accordingly, the lighting is also an important factor when buying a machine.

There are also different machine types for different requirements. Free-arm sewing machines, for example, are not installed into a table and the lower part of the machine is free.

This is an advantage, says sewing expert Andrea Biehler from Tuev Sued. Round waistbands and trouser legs can thus be easily pulled over and finished.

Computerised sewing machines perform some tasks automatically – such as making decorative stitches or a buttonhole. Certain stitches are pre- programmed.

Overlock sewing machines include additional features and are suitable for frequent sewers who want to refine fabric edges when shortening items.

The special feature here is that the lower thread closes the upper thread, something which normal machines usually can't do.

Those who like decorating fabrics with embroidery should think about purchasing a separate embroidery machine. – dpa
