Stop wearing boring tights

Stylists share their ideas for the best ways to match colours with your outfits

IT’S time to brighten up your sock drawer with some colourful tights. They won’t just keep you warm, they’re also eyecatching and can style up any outfit.

STANDING OUT WITH COLOURS

“Anyone who opts for colourful tights should be clear on one thing: they’ll definitely turn heads,” says personal shopper Andrea Lakeberg. “Particularly if yours are a vibrant colour.” Fuchsia tights are very on trend, especially when paired with an outfit of the same colour, which definitely makes for an eyecatching look.

Putting together a monochrome combo is easy, but there’s a fine line between looking clownish and stylish. The important thing is to keep the colours consistent, Lakeberg advises. “Otherwise, the effect is unbalanced. The same is true for light-coloured tones and earth tones like tan or brown.”

MIXING THINGS UP

There’s no rule without exceptions – so here’s an alternative to the monochrome look: “Wearing colourful tights with a darker-toned outfit makes them even more eye-catching,” says fashion advisor Ritchie Karkowski. “A light grey dress looks great with tights in a sunny yellow or orange.”

For those who want to create a look somewhere between strong contrasts and monochrome, he says: “Make sure the colour of the tights reflects one of the colours in the outfit, then you can’t go wrong – for example, blue tights with a blue velvet blazer and a black skirt is a stylish look.”
