Anti-ICERD rally: No police approval yet

> DBKL has not agreed to use of Dataran Merdeka, says IGP

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have not given the green light for the rallies on Dec 2 and 8 against the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD).

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun said organisers have also yet to be granted approval by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to use Dataran Merdeka.

“They need approval from DBKL, then we will decide. Whether we approve or not will depend on the security situation,” he said after attending a forum titled “Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC): In the Direction of Excellence in Policing Service” at the Police College in Cheras yesterday.

The Malaysian Insight had reported that organisers of the Dec 8 rally have maintained that the gathering will be held at Dataran Merdeka, and told supporters they were confident of obtaining the necessary official approvals by then.

Gerakan Pembela Ummah (Ummah) chairman Aminuddin Yahaya urged those planning to attend the rally to ignore rumours stating the venue or date will be changed.

“For now, we are sticking to the plan to hold the gathering at Dataran

Merdeka,” he said yesterday.

Aminuddin said the organisers have held discussions with the police to ensure the gathering will be conducted in a peaceful manner without any provocation, adding that DBKL has left the decision of granting a permit to the Cabinet.

“The prime minister made a statement that he has no problems with us gathering, as long as we follow the conditions of a peaceful rally.

“Home Minister (Tan Sri) Muhyiddin Yassin has also given his views, (he also has) no problems with it,” he said.

On a separate matter, Mohamad Fuzi said firefighter Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim was indeed assaulted and not hit by a fire engine during the second day of protests at the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple on Tuesday.

“Based on information we received, he was not knocked down by a fire truck. Fire and Rescue directorgeneral Datuk Mohamad Hamdan Wahid had also clarified this yesterday and a police report has been made,” he said.
