Enforcement of VEP rule deferred
PETALING JAYA: The Transport Ministry has agreed to defer the enforcement of the Vehicle Entry Permit ( VEP) rule on all outbound traffic during peak hours.
However, the deferment only applies for traffic heading for Singapore through Johor’s Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) and Kompleks Sultan Abu Bakar (KSAB).
The decision was made in response to the difficulties vehicle owners face in getting appointments for the installation of the VEP-RFID tag.
Registration for the VEP was opened in April to give owners of foreign vehicles six months to complete the process before the ruling is enforced on Oct 1, the ministry said in a statement yesterday.
It did not say when the ruling would finally be enforced.
The ministry said owners of foreign vehicles could still register for VEP through its website https://vep.jpj.gov.my and collect their VEP-RFID tags at four designated fitment centres in Johor Baru.
These centres are at the Gelang Patah Southbound R&R, Plaza
Angsana open car park, Pandan R&R and Lima Kedai toll plaza.
Apart from those, the tags can be collected at the Road Transport Department (RTD) office at KSAB.
“Car owners can get their VEP-RFID tags installed at these locations once all preparations have been completed,” the statement said.
The ministry said the date when operations at the new fitment centre would begin would be announced soon.
It said that at BSI and KSAB, the
RTD would focus on informing owners of foreign vehicles on the need to register for the VEP.
Under section 66H of the Road Transport Act 1987, anyone who drives a foreign-registered motor vehicle into Malaysia must apply for a VEP.
The VEP is a vital component of the government’s effort to address the problem of violation of traffic rules by owners of foreign vehicles and importing or exporting of stolen or illegitimately registered vehicles.
The VEP enables the RTD to keep track of foreign-owned motor vehicles in Malaysia.
