Scandals and a good deed

-

PKR Youth chief Haziq Aziz claimed that the two men were Azmin and him.

Azmin vehemently denied he was one of the duo, calling it a nefarious plot to destroy his political career.

Another person who hogged the limelight was fugitive and controversial preacher Zakir Naik.

While speaking at a public forum in August, he said the Indian community “seemed to be more loyal to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi than to Mahathir”.

Days later, he described the Malaysian Chinese as “guests of the country who should be sent back to China”.

Police grilled him for hours over his remarks but he claimed he was misquoted and his statements taken out of context. He was subsequently banned from making public speeches. He also apologised to the Chinese and Indians.

In April, his protege Muhammad Zamri Vinoth Kalimuthu left Hindus slighted when he allegedly made blasphemous comments on Hinduism.

Zamri, who in the past had been investigated for rape, causing hurt and criminal breach of trust, also denied the accusations.

Fortunately, there was some good news too.

In October, 27-year-old policewoman Komathi Narayanan earned praise when she helped a heavily pregnant woman deliver her baby in a taxi together with cabbie Wong Kok Loong.

The young policewoman was on duty at a police beat at the Bandar Tasik Selatan interstate bus terminal when the woman staggered towards her in pain indicating that she was about to deliver a child.

Seeing it might be too late for her if they waited for an ambulance, Komathi dashed out of the terminal to hail a taxi but was turned down by three cabbies.

However, when Wong came along, he agreed to ferry the pregnant woman to a hospital.

Komathi accompanied the woman in the rear seat, but just minutes later, the woman went into labour.

As Wong sped towards the hospital, the feisty policewoman played midwife and helped the mother deliver her bundle of joy, a baby boy.

It did not matter to Komathi that her police uniform was soiled in the process.

For their deeds, Komathi and Wong were rewarded with certificates of appreciation by Cheras police.
