Battling for national pride

-

EVERY two years, the world’s best lion dance troupes gather 6,000 feet above sea level at Resorts World Genting to test their skills against each other.

Scheduled to be held from July 10-12 at the Arena of Stars, the 14th Genting World Lion Dance Championship 2020 promises to be the biggest and greatest championship yet.

Over the years, the Championship has welcomed troupes from traditional strongholds such as Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Hong Kong, China, Taiwan and Macau, as well as teams from as far as Australia, Japan, France and the USA.

The amazing action will begin with the preliminary rounds on July 10 and 11. Presenting their best routines and skillfully-coordinated action, the teams will hope to astonish spectators and judges by putting their best paws forward.

After battling it out with their peers, the teams that score the highest point tallies will then move on to the next level – qualifying for the final on July 12.

At stake is not just national honour and personal glory, but a suite of amazing prizes. The champions this year will take home a cash prize of US$15,000, to go with the Championship trophy and winners’ medals. The first and second runners-up will be awarded US$8,000 and US$5,000, respectively, while the eight other teams qualifying for the finals will receive a cash prize of US$1,500 each, along with participation trophies. The special East and West Lion King trophies will also be awarded to the best teams from the eastern and western hemispheres.

New this year will be a special Golden Drum Award (with a cash prize of US$1,000) for the best drummer troupe as chosen by the judging panel, while audiences can vote for their favourites for the very first time through the People’s Choice Award (with a cash prize of US$1,000).
