SELANGOR will not follow suit should a snap general election be called, said Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

In an interview with Oriental Daily News published yesterday, he said Selangor Pakatan Harapan (PH) will follow an earlier decision made by the PH presidential council that there will be no snap polls for states governed by the coalition even if a snap general election is called.

Amirudin said there is no need for a snap polls in Selangor as the state PH enjoys a twothirds majority in the state assembly and there are more than two years to go before the current term expires.

“Perikatan Nasional (PN) is running the federal government with a razor-thin majority. Furthermore, Umno has kept attacking PH, leading to talk of a snap election.

“On the contrary, the PH state government is still very stable. (We will) continue to focus on our duties, especially post Covid-19.”

Amirudin, who is a PKR supreme council member, had been seen as belonging to a faction led by Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali when the latter was the party’s No. 2.

Asked why he did not follow Azmin in walking out on PKR, Amirudin stressed that what he follows is PKR’s ideology and not any individual.

He said Azmin was not the first PKR leader to quit the party and what is important is that the concept of reformasi must continue.

On his current relationship with Azmin, Amirudin said the two of them would occasionally bump into each other when on official duties or exchange festive greetings, but there has been no contact whatsoever on politics.

“He opted to join Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia while I chose to stay with PKR. In politics, we are on opposing sides.”

On his relationship with Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, he stressed that he respects the latter’s position as party chief and meets him regularly on state government matters.

Amirudin does not agree with the purging of leaders aligned to Azmin following the “Sheraton Move”.

“We have friends who insist on staying put in PKR because they put party interests above self. I hope the party will go through a fair process before taking any action (against those who had been close to Azmin). The leaders concerned should also be given a chance to show cause.”

With Azmin gone, Amirudin has been left holding the fort in Selangor.

He reiterated that Selangor PKR is still solid and all 22 divisions are functioning as usual, including Azmin’s bastion – Gombak.
