SIBU: With most of its 52 branches scheduled to complete their elections by this weekend, the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) will move into high gear for its triennial delegates conference in Kuching on May 21, said its president Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian.

He said the elections have been going on smoothly at all branches, with some senior leaders expected to make way for younger members.

“The senior members are saying they are giving way to the young ones. I want to thank them. I appreciate those who have contributed towards the party, especially when it was really down in the past six to seven years.”

He was speaking after opening the SUPP Bukit Assek Service Centre at Tong Sang Road yesterday.

Sim said some senior members wanted to continue contributing to the party for more years.

“We welcome them. This is the culture of

SUPP, remaining united rather than fighting among themselves after winning elections,” said Sim, who is deputy premier of Sarawak.

“People are only interested in what you can do for them, for the economy, for development. That is also our aim.”

Asked about the party’s preparations for the 15th general election (GE15), he said SUPP would be monitoring the situation closely as nobody knows when it would be held.

He said those aiming to be SUPP candidates in GE15 should always be close to the people.

“What I have said many times is that one should not work only after being announced as a candidate but be on the ground always, helping the people, sharing their aspirations and showing sincerity.

“The more you are on the ground, the more popular you will be. That’s what I have always told SUPP members. Get ready to do your work.”
