93 evacuated after flash floods hit Kota Tinggi

JOHOR BARU: Kota Tinggi became the latest district to be hit by flash floods in Johor, increasing the number of evacuees to 93 as of 8am yesterday, from only 21 from Segamat on Wednesday.

The District Disaster Management Committee said a relief centre at Dewan Al-Barakah was opened at 10pm on Wednesday to accommodate 72 evacuees, involving 18 families, from Kota Tinggi.

“This brings the total number of relier centres in operation to three, with the two earlier ones being at the Kampung Batu Badak community hall and the Kampung Kuala Paya commumnity hall opened on Wednesday to provide shelter to 21 evacuees from six families in the Segamat district.”

The areas affected by the floods in Segamat are Kampung Seberang Batu Badak, Kampung Batu 5 and

Kampung Kuala Paya, while in Kota Tinggi, the flash floods hit Kampung Sri Jaya and Kampung Sri Delima.

On Wednesday, Sungai Muar spilled its banks and flooded the low-lying areas.

Meanwhile, a total of 528 evacuees, from 162 families, were still at seven relief centres at three districts in Sabah as of 8am yesterday.

The three flood-affected districts are Tenom, Beaufort and Kunak.

The State Disaster Management Committee secretariat said most of the 443 evacuees, from 139 families, are from Tenom.

They are being sheltered at five relief centres in the district.

The relief centres are the Makakagas Cultural House, which had 117 evacuees from 32 families; the Kalang Kanar Cultural House that took in 29 from seven families; the Gunting Cultural House that sheltered 33 from seven families; the Pagukon Cultural House that accomodated 214 from 78 families; and the Tenom Sports Complex that took in 50 from 15 families.

In Beaufort, the relief centre is at the Datuk Seri Panglima Dun Banir Hall, with 57 evacuees from 17 families, while in Kunak, 28 evacuees from six families were being housed temporarily at the Kampung Airport Tun Fuad Hall. – Bernama
