Grunting camels leave England facing sleepless nights

-

ENGLAND’S footballers could get the right hump with their World Cup hotel – thanks to a pair of camels grunting through the night outside.

Team boss Gareth Southgate and FA chiefs picked the Souq Al Wakra Hotel as the Three Lions’ HQ to escape the bustle of Qatar capital Doha.

They must have thought the deluxe wellness retreat 20km outside the city on the shore of the Arabian Gulf was the perfect place for the players to get plenty of rest during the month-long tournament.

But they may not have figured on a grumpy duo of desert dwellers moaning, groaning and bellowing at all hours right outside their rooms.

The couple live in a fenced off pen on the beach yards from lodges set to be occupied by the FA’s 95-strong delegation of players, coaching and support staff. Camels are known for their noisy banter.

Their throats are more flexible than other mammals’ allowing them to produce a variety of loud, resonant sounds ranging from brays and hums to high-pitched squeaks.

They even scream if they are forced to get up from a kneeling position unwillingly.

The noise from one was used to create Chewbacca’s voice in the Star Wars movies. Locals say the pair outside England’s hotel particularly love a chitchat.

Their groans repeatedly interrupted one frustrated cameraman trying to film footage of England’s hotel – forcing seven re-shoots.

One local cafe owner said: “The camels like to talk. It makes them popular with the tourists.

“Maybe they will keep England awake so Qatar will win.”

The FA has not responded to a request for comment. – Daily Express
