Muhyiddin to produce proof of backing from MPs

-

SHAH ALAM: Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said he will show statutory declarations (SD) from MPs as proof that the coalition has enough numbers and support to form the government.

Muhyiddin said claims by Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi that BN had never had discussions with Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) about offering the party’s support to PN to form the government, would not prevent PN from forming the federal government.

“If any MP decides to support me based on the Federal Constitution to become the prime minister, that is the right of the MP. The Constitution says if anyone wishes to become the prime minister, he or she must receive the support of a majority of MPs, at least 112.”

He was speaking after chairing a Bersatu supreme council meeting.

Muhyiddin added that the Anti-Party Hopping Act does not prevent any party from offering support to him to become the next prime minister.

“This is because they (members) do not leave their party but offer their support as individuals and as MPs. That is not wrong according to the Act.”

Earlier, it was reported that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had decreed that leaders of coalitions and political parties must inform the Palace of the agreed coalition to form the new government by 2pm yesterday.

Leaders were also asked to submit the names of their respective prime ministerial candidates by then.

The deadline has since been extended to 2pm today.

In the recent polls, Pakatan Harapan emerged with the most parliamentary seats at 82, followed by PN with 73, Barisan Nasional with 30, GPS with 22, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah with six, Parti Warisan with three and Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat and Parti Bangsa Malaysia with one each. Independent candidates clinched two seats.

For a simple majority to form the government, a minimum of 112 seats is required.
