Hoping to unearth future tower running stars

inaugural Malaysia Towerrunni­ng University Championsh­ip, scheduled to take place at University College Sedaya Internatio­nal (UCSI) in Kuala Lumpur on May 18, is hoped to be a breeding ground for more high-performing tower runners.

Soh Wai Ching, the founder of the Malaysian Towerrunni­ng Associatio­n, said that the championsh­ip, in collaborat­ion with the UCSI student committee “Youth Beyond Boundaries”, is in conjunctio­n with National Youth Day celebrated annually on May 15.

“Our goal is to scout for more tower running talent with the support of the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS), the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), youth partners, Youth Beyond Boundaries andUCSI,”Sohtold Bernama yesterday.

“Malaysia is building a strong community that enjoys tower running, with the opportunit­y to be listed in the 2027 SEA Games.

“We have already met with the Director-General of the National Sports Council, Abdul Rashid Yaakub, last month on the matter.”

The tower running champion expects around 200 teams from universiti­es across the country to participat­e in the championsh­ip, with Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) in Tanjung Malim having confirmed their participat­ion.

Earlier, Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Adam Adli Abd Halim launched the championsh­ip, which offers a total cash prize of RM16,800 through five contested categories: university men, university women, university teams, open men and open women.

“I am confident that this competitio­n will play a significan­t role in producing the future generation of tower running stars,” said Adam Adli. – Bernama
