Press-sec named KKB by-election candidate

Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming’s Press Secretary Pang Sock Tao was announced as the unity government’s candidate for the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election on May 11.

DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke said the selection of Pang, 31, was agreed by leaders of component parties in the unity government to allow DAP to retain the seat.

“The candidate plays an important role. In choosing the candidate, there are several important factors to be considered. Among them are experience, academic qualificat­ion and knowledge,” he said on Wednesday.

Among those present at the announceme­nt were DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng and deputy chairman Gobind Singh Deo, Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan and Selangor Umno chairman Datuk Megat Zulkarnain Omardin.

The Election Commission fixed polling date for the by-election on May 11, while nomination date has been fixed for Saturday. Early voting will be held on May 7.

The by-election, the seventh since the 15th general election, is being called after the seat fell vacant when the incumbent Lee Kee Hiong, 58, passed away due to cancer on March 21.

Pang thanked the leadership for selecting her as the candidate.

She said she has been involved in politics for six years and expressed hope to continue

Lee’s legacy.

“I believe my experience will bring positive developmen­t in Kuala Kubu Baharu,” she said in her speech after being announced as the candidate.

Pang is a Universiti Tenaga Nasional graduate in Electrical and Electronic Engineerin­g.

Pang had worked as Ubah TV assistant producer (2017-2018) and producer (20202022), was the Energy, Science, Technology and Climate Change minister special officer (2018-2020) and was the Housing and Local Government minister’s special officer from December 2022-January 2024 before being appointed as Nga’s press secretary. – Bernama
