Probe on impersonation of anti-scam agency staff

-

LUMPUR: Police opened 49 investigation papers between January and April regarding cases of individuals impersonating National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) officers that have resulted in RM6.79 million in losses.

Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf said the call centre has been targeted by a fraud syndicate since it was established last year.

“A purported NSRC officer would contact individuals and inform them that their phone numbers would be cancelled due to complaints involving fraudulent activities.

“The call would then be connected to an accomplice impersonating a police officer and the individual would be told to follow all instructions, eventually transferring money to a designated bank account.”

He reminded the public not to be easily duped if they receive a call from NSRC because it is a one-way call centre that only receives calls and never makes calls to any individual.

“Any call purporting to be from NSRC is a scam. To optimise efforts to eradicate and prevent online fraud crimes, police urge victims to contact NSRC at 997 and report the incident immediately.”

NSRC is a local response centre that consolidates resources and expertise from the National Anti-Financial Crime Centre, police, Bank Negara Malaysia, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, banking institutions and telecommunications services companies to receive reports from cyber fraud victims. – Bernama
