We meet zero-waste champion Claire Sancelot and her three lovely daughters
NAWAF RAHMAN caught up with Claire Sancelot, who champions a zero waste lifestyle and is the founder of The Hive Bulk Foods – purveyor of ethically sourced organic goods like vegetables straight from the farm, grains, seeds and basic toiletries. She was joined by her three precocious daughters – Lucie (aged six) and twins Charlotte and Emilie (aged four) at their lovely home. Here’s an excerpt of our conversation.
You’re married to a Malaysian. Are your kids bilingual?
Claire Yes, they can speak English and French. At home, I speak French and my husband speaks English, while my motherin-law speaks Tamil and Malay.
And you’ve lived in other countries before. What do you like most about Malaysia?
CL It’s a great place to relax, we love the rainforests, the weather… Lucie, Charlotte & Emilie …and the food! E Char kuey teow is the best!
Where was the last place you went on holiday as a family?
CL Singapore for Christmas, and before that Langkawi in September.
Can you describe each daughter’s personality?
CL Lucie has a lot of imagination, and she loves Merida [a character in Disney’s animation film ‘Brave’] so much. Emilie is scared of nothing – she’s a crime-fighter – and Charlotte is comical.
Hi Lucie, how do you spell your sisters’ names?
L That one is Emilie. E-M-I-L-I-E. That one is... I can’t spell her name [Charlotte] because her name is too long.
What would you like to be when you grow up?
L I want to be teacher. CH A ballerina. But I can’t dance. E I want to be a space teacher. [ Giggles] No, I lied. I want to be a doctor.
Your mum told me that you guys don’t like the zoo. Why?
L The animals are in a cage. CH I don’t like dolphin shows… poor them! CL Tell them why you don’t like to use plastic L No plastic, because if there’s plastic in the water the turtles and dolphins will die.
