Cooper S – 3-door and 5-door – refreshed, as is the track-ready JCW model
The facelifted versions of MINI’s 3-door and 5-door Cooper S are now on sale, fitted with the latest powertrains from the BMW Group to deliver both increased driving excitement and better fuel efficiency. The full-fat John Cooper Works variant is also part of the refreshed line-up.
The Cooper S is available in both 3 and 5-door forms, but the John Cooper Works (JWC) is limited to the 3-door. Both Cooper Ses are powered by the 2.0-litre 4-cylinder MINI TwinPower Turbo engine, which delivers up to 192bhp and 280Nm of torque, and a top speed of 235kph. The JCW makes 231bhp and 320Nm.
The cars also gain a new engine cover made of carbon fibre reinforced plastic which is 13 percent lighter than before. The engine itself is eight kilogrammes lighter.
Loss of weight alone helps to make them more efficient MINIs. There’s more of that, however. These models now have a Coasting feature that’s now not only available in the GREEN mode, but also in MID. That happens when the engine goes to idle when cruising (and the foot is taken off the pedal).
New as well are the electronic gearshift and the 7-speed dual clutch gearbox in the Cooper S MINIs.
The 3-door goes from 0 to 100kph in 6.7 seconds and the combined fuel consumption is 5.5L/100km. The 5-door does 0-100kph in ???? and offers a combined fuel consumption of 5.6L/100km. Meanwhile, the JCW still sports an 8-speed automatic.
Headlamps and tail lamps are LEDs with a new DRLs design, the latter taking the role of turn indicators when needed. Interestingly, the rear has tail lights with a stylised Union Jack flag motif. Very cool.
Both the Cooper S cars come with 17-inch alloys: the 3-door has Cosmos Spoke wheels in black, while the 5-door has the glossy black JWC Track Spoke wheels. The wheels have been developed for maximum weight support and are wrapped in run-flat tyres.
Similarities continue in the 6.5-inch colour touchscreen that complements the MINI Controller. When required, the screen displays images from the reverse camera (with guidelines), another new addition to the facelifted MINI.
While both Cooper S variants share the same
Cross Punch in Carbon Black leather upholstery, the trim for the 5-door is black chequered.
Externally, other than the doors, what else is different between the Cooper S variants? Well, the 5-door gets something a bit extra in the form of the JWC aerodynamic kit which includes a rear spoiler.
Meanwhile, for the first time in Southeast Asia, MINI Yours customised accessories are available. The options you can now have include side scuttles, cockpit facia, LED Door Sills Finishers and LED Door Projector which can be made available according to the customer’s personally designed specifications.
The 3-door MINI Cooper S is priced at RM226,888, the 5-door Cooper S at RM236,888, and the MINI John Cooper Works at RM283,888.
