A legend remembered

Top Gear (Malaysia) - - Watch List -

Porsche has presented many iconic 911 models over the years, but a few are a little more special than others. One would be the Carrera RS 2.7 introduced during motorsports’ glorious 70s when it made an immediate impact on circuit racing as well as rally ing.

That particular car inspired niche Danish watchmaker REC to design the REC 901 RS Limited Edition that incorporates parts of the Carrera 2.7 RS and some design elements that are unmistakably Porsche. If the name sounds familiar, this same watchmaker has famously crafted tributes to other four-wheeled icons such as the MINI Cooper and the Ford Mustang.

This timepiece sees not just any Carrera RS 2.7 being the source of its build, the stor y of the car is as much a part of the product. The car was from 1973, and German rally driver Peter Rumpf keil was one of the first few owners. During his three-year ownership, Rumpf keil raced it in several rallies including the prestigious Monte Carlo Rally in 1976 and 1977, and the Lombard RAC Rally in 1976. After that, it was sold to Danish racer Jorgen Schultz.

It just so happened that Timo Rumpf keil – Peter’s son – learned of the REC 901 Collection project and contacted REC to offer more details of the car. As it turned out, its first owner was another famous German racer, Clemens Schickentanz. In fact, many others went on to enjoy the experience of racing it.

Provenance aside, the REC 901 RS Limited Edition’s design clearly emulates the soft cur ves of the classic 911, especially in its exquisitely shaped case and stainless steel bracelet. Interestingly, it’s the f irst time the company has used a stainless steel bracelet in any of its products.

The dial’s inner bezel is yellow instead of the factory standard hero red (stripe), but there’s a reason for this: the ‘donor’ car, in its rally days, mostly sported yellow or yellow and black colours, so the timepiece really does pay proper homage to one specific RS 2.7.

Every 901 RS Limited Edition piece includes the car’s VIN number and a ‘Story Card’ which details what made it extra special. The VIN number is stamped on the side of the case while the Stor y Card is included in the watch’s fancy box.

Available in limited quantities worldwide, the REC 901 RS Limited Edition retails here at RM8,159 through Red Army Watches outlets.
