Playvolley beat Mgarr 3-0 to maintain top spot

-

The first set saw BKVC field Graziella Grech in their starting formation.

Qormi took the driving seat by 4 points thanks to server Daniela Cuschieri. However, BKVC won the service and with 10 consecutive services by Rebecca Manduca and great team work BKVC went ahead. Qormi looked demoralised and BKVC won the set 25-15.

In the second set, BKVC continued where they left in the first. With Rebecca Manduca serving for them, they managed to take a healthy 10-0 lead. With good defence work by Juliette Vella and Graziella Grech coupled with strong attacks by Denise Grima Connell, BKVC managed to win 25-08. During the third set, both teams were cautious not to make too many mistakes, but BKVC stepped up a gear around the end of the set to win it 25-15. Rebecca Manduca was the best player for BKVC and Moira Puli was Qormi’s best performer.

Playvolley managed to beat Mgarr 3-0 to maintain top spot. Mgarr put up a good fight in this game though Playvolley defended tenaciously with Whitney Mintoff making a number of good points through her attack.

Playvolley’s Yana Cutajar and Lorainne’s Soler’s experience was critical to keep Mgarr at bay with Playvolley winning the sets 25-13; 25-14; 25-13.

At the end of the game, Playvolley’s coach was happy with the good win, but he was not happy that the team allowed their opponents to play their game at times during the match.

Mellieha were missing several players and Flyers 2 never allowed their opponents to settle down with good attacks from Mandy Fenech and Luana Bugeja.

Mellieha’s setter Judith Scerri Valletta tried her best to keep up the match rhythm. However Fly- ers libero Monique Fava was in an inspired mood to pick up most of the attacks.

At the end of the match Melissa Cheviron’s Flyers Coach comments were: “This match showed us how our hard work of the last several months has paid off. We worked well together, and Mellieha never stopped fighting. We were able to respond with a great effort from everyone on the team.

After two smooth first sets we were lagging in the third, but a great run of relief serves from Angelique Schembri helped us to take the win. Mandy Fenech and Luana Bugeja led our offence while Monique Fava helped maintain a strong defence."
